Matorral refers to an area of dense shrubs or scrub vegetation; it is a common landscape term in Spain and Latin America for Mediterranean-type scrubland (matorral mediterráneo). The singular is also used collectively. It derives from mato (shrub) + the augmentative suffix -rral.
