margen

margin

noun MAHR-hen Less Common

Origin: From Latin marginem.

Also means

edge; bank (of river)

Usage Note

Margen has a tricky gender: when it means a margin or edge in the abstract or typographic sense, it is typically masculine (el margen de beneficio - profit margin); when it refers to the bank or edge of a river (la margen del río), it is feminine. Learners often get this wrong. The phrase al margen de means 'aside from, apart from'.
