Maltrato is a deverbal noun from maltratar (to mistreat). It appears most often in compound phrases: maltrato doméstico (domestic abuse), maltrato animal (animal abuse). Note the related verb maltratar and the noun maltratador (abuser). The plural maltratos is regular and common in legal and social contexts.
