Más carries a written accent to distinguish it from mas (literary 'but'). It forms comparatives (más alto que) and superlatives (el más alto), and the fixed phrase más o menos ('more or less') is ubiquitous in everyday speech. As an adverb of degree it also intensifies adjectives and other adverbs.
