llamar

to call; to name

verb yah-MAHR Common

Origin: From Latin clamare, 'to shout, call.'

Also means

to phone

Usage Note

Llamar is the standard word for making a phone call (te llamo mañana, 'I'll call you tomorrow'). The reflexive llamarse means 'to be called/named': me llamo Ana ('my name is Ana'). Note the ll is pronounced like the English 'y' sound. Llamar la atención means both 'to attract attention' and 'to reprimand' — a context-dependent idiom.

Examples

"Te llamo más tarde, ¿de acuerdo?"

Natural Translation

I'll call you later, okay?

Literal Translation

To-you I-call later, of-agreement?
