limón

lemon

noun lee-MOHN Rare

Origin: From Arabic laymun, via Old Spanish.

Usage Note

Limón in most of Spanish-speaking Latin America means the small green fruit (what English calls a 'lime'); the yellow variety is often called limón amarillo or simply not distinguished. In Spain limón is the yellow lemon and lima is the lime. This can cause confusion when ordering drinks across regions.

Examples

"Añade el zumo de un limón a la ensalada."

Natural Translation

Add the juice of a lemon to the salad.
