Usage Note
Lago refers to a natural lake (el lago Titicaca). Learners sometimes confuse it with laguna, which is a smaller or shallower body of water (lagoon or pond), and estanque, which is an artificial pond or tank. Lago is used in many Spanish and Latin American proper names and geographical references.
Examples
"Navegamos por el lago en una pequeña barca."
Natural Translation
We sailed across the lake in a small boat.
