jabón

soap

noun hah-BOHN Rare

Origin: from Latin saponem, of Germanic origin

Usage Note

Jabón is the standard word for soap in all Spanish-speaking regions. The accent on the final syllable is obligatory to mark stress: without it the word would be read jábon (incorrect). The diminutive jaboncillo refers to a small bar of soap or a type of chalk used in tailoring. Note that jabonera is the soap dish, and jabonoso/jabonosa means 'soapy'.

Examples

"No olvides usar jabón al lavarte las manos."

Natural Translation

Don't forget to use soap when washing your hands.
