Empapar means to soak thoroughly — either transitively (la lluvia me empapó, 'the rain soaked me') or reflexively (me empapé hasta los huesos, 'I got soaked to the bone'). Figuratively empaparse de means to immerse oneself in knowledge — empaparse del tema antes de hablar ('to steep oneself in the subject before speaking').
