Usage Note

Irreductible (also spelled irreducible) describes something that cannot be simplified further or a person who will not yield under pressure. In mathematics it describes a fraction or polynomial that cannot be reduced; in everyday speech an opositor irreductible is a staunch opponent who refuses compromise. Both spellings are accepted by the RAE.
