ir

to go

verb EER Common

Origin: From Latin ire.

Usage Note

Ir is one of the most irregular Spanish verbs: its present tense (voy, vas, va...) and preterite (fui, fuiste, fue...) are entirely suppletive — they share the same preterite forms as ser. The periphrastic future ir a + infinitive (voy a comer) is the default future in speech. Irse (reflexive) means 'to leave' or 'to go away'.

Examples

"Voy al mercado esta tarde."

Natural Translation

I am going to the market this afternoon.
