intimidar

to intimidate

verb een-tee-mee-DAHR Rare

Also means

to bully

Usage Note

Intimidar means to make someone feel fearful or coerced. It is commonly used in legal contexts (intimidación = 'intimidation') and in descriptions of aggressive behaviour. The reflexive intimidarse means 'to feel intimidated'. It should not be confused with intimar ('to become intimate/close'), which is a false friend for English speakers.

Examples

"El acusado intentó intimidar a los testigos."

Natural Translation

The defendant tried to intimidate the witnesses.
