Usage Note

Interrumpir is used for both cutting off a person mid-speech and stopping a process or signal. The double rr spelling reflects the original Latin prefix inter- + rumpere; speakers often soften it to a single tap in fast speech. The noun form is interrupción and the electrical switch is an interruptor.
