Usage Note

Insulto is the standard noun for a verbal insult or slur. The verb is insultar. In heated speech you may also hear ofensa (offense) or improperio (strong verbal abuse). Lanzar insultos ('to hurl insults') and proferir insultos are common collocations in written Spanish.
