Usage Note

Incógnita is feminine despite ending in -a following normal gender patterns. In mathematics it is the standard word for an 'unknown' in an equation (the x). Outside maths it describes any unanswered question or unsolved mystery — la gran incógnita ('the big unknown') is a very common journalistic phrase.
