Origin: From Latin imperium, from imperare (to command).

Usage Note

Imperio refers both to a political empire and, more broadly, to supreme dominance or sway in any domain (el imperio de la ley). The adjective imperial derives from it, as does the verb imperar ('to prevail, reign').
