Usage Note
Iluminado serves both a literal sense ('lit up, well-lit') and a figurative one ('spiritually enlightened'). In the figurative sense it can be ironic — se cree un iluminado ('he thinks he's some kind of visionary') describes someone who overestimates their own insight. As a noun, el iluminado / los iluminados refers to a 'visionary' or, in history, to members of illuminist movements.
