Usage Note

Hormiga is feminine: la hormiga. The h is silent, so the article does not switch to el (unlike agua or hacha where stress falls on the first syllable). The adjective hormiguero ('ant-like, teeming') derives from it, as does oso hormiguero ('anteater').
