hito

milestone

noun EE-toh Rare

Origin: From Latin fictus via Old Spanish, originally a boundary post driven into the ground.

Also means

landmark

Usage Note

Hito literally referred to a stone post marking a boundary or route (mojón); today it is almost always figurative: un hito histórico ('a historic milestone'). The same idea of fixedness survives in the set phrase mirar de hito en hito ('to stare fixedly at someone'). Hito is always masculine and is a high-frequency word in journalism and essays.

Examples

"La misión lunar fue un hito de la humanidad."

Natural Translation

The moon mission was a milestone for humanity.
