Usage Note
Hipertensión is the medical term for persistently elevated blood pressure, often abbreviated to HTA (hipertensión arterial) in clinical notes. Patients and non-specialists more commonly say tensión alta or presión alta in everyday speech. The opposite condition is hipotensión. Note the silent 'h' at the start: Spanish speakers pronounce it starting with the 'i' sound.
