Usage Note

Hallar is more formal and literary than encontrar, which covers the same meaning in everyday speech. Hallarse (reflexive) means 'to find oneself' in the sense of being located or in a certain state (se halla en Paris, she is (currently) in Paris). The noun hallazgo (find, discovery) is very common in archaeology and journalism.
