hacienda

estate

noun ah-SYEN-dah Rare

Also means

treasury, tax authority

Usage Note

Hacienda has two distinct lives: as a rural estate or ranch (especially in Latin America), and as the Spanish treasury or tax office — la Hacienda Pública or simply Hacienda, the body equivalent to the IRS or HMRC. Learners often know only the ranch sense, but the fiscal sense is far more frequent in modern written Spanish.

Examples

"Hacienda le envió una carta de aviso."

Natural Translation

The tax authority sent him a warning letter.
