guerra

war

noun GEH-rrah Common

Origin: from Germanic werra (conflict)

Usage Note

Guerra is feminine and of Germanic origin — one of the few common Spanish nouns with that etymology. The phrases en tiempos de guerra ('in times of war') and declarar la guerra ('to declare war') are standard collocations. Guerrero (warrior) and guerrilla (literally 'little war', now meaning an irregular fighting force) are direct derivatives that passed into English.

Examples

"La guerra duró cuatro años."

Natural Translation

The war lasted four years.
