gripe

flu

noun GREE-peh Rare

Origin: From French grippe, possibly from gripper 'to seize'.

Usage Note

Gripe is feminine in Spain and most of Latin America, though a few regions use it as masculine. It refers specifically to influenza, not a common cold (resfriado or catarro). The adjective is gripal (síntomas gripales, flu-like symptoms). Note the final e is pronounced: 'GREE-peh', not silent as in English 'gripe'.

Examples

"Estuvo en cama tres días con la gripe."

Natural Translation

She was in bed for three days with the flu.
