Usage Note
Fugar is almost always used in the reflexive form fugarse: se fugó de la cárcel = 'he escaped from prison.' The standalone non-reflexive fugar is rare and largely literary. It is distinct from huir (to flee in general) in that fugarse stresses an escape from confinement or from someone. The noun fuga (escape, also a musical fugue) shares the same root.
Examples
"El prisionero logró fugarse durante la noche."
Natural Translation
The prisoner managed to escape during the night.
