fijar

to fix

verb fee-HAHR Less Common

Also means

to set

Usage Note

Fijar means to fix or fasten physically (fijar un cuadro en la pared) and to set or establish something officially (fijar una fecha, fijar precios). The reflexive fijarse means to notice or pay attention — ¡fíjate! (just look at that! / can you believe it?) is a very common exclamation. Learners who know only one meaning often miss the reflexive nuance entirely.

Examples

"Fijaron la fecha de la reunión."

Natural Translation

They set the date for the meeting.
