exile
Usage Note
Exiliado functions as both an adjective (el escritor exiliado — the exiled writer) and a noun (los exiliados — the exiles). It derives from exiliar (to exile) and is more specific than desterrado (banished). The feminine form is exiliada. In historical contexts relating to the Spanish Civil War, los exiliados republicanos is a very common fixed phrase.
