Estúpido is a strong insult and should be used with care; it is stronger than tonto (silly/dumb) and closer in force to English 'stupid' or 'idiotic.' As a noun it means 'a stupid person': no seas estúpido. The adverb estúpidamente and the noun estupidez are closely related. In colloquial speech it is often shortened in tone by speakers but remains quite offensive in formal or professional contexts.
