Etanol is the scientific and technical term for ethyl alcohol (C₂H₅OH), used as a fuel additive, solvent, and disinfectant, as well as the alcohol found in beverages. In everyday speech, alcohol is used instead; etanol appears in chemistry, medicine, and biofuel contexts. It is distinct from metanol (methanol), which is toxic.
