Estadía is the standard word for a period of stay in Latin America, equivalent to estancia in Spain. In legal and commercial contexts it also refers to demurrage — the charge for detaining a ship, container, or vehicle beyond the agreed time. Learners should note that Spain strongly prefers estancia for a personal stay.
