ugly or absurd person
Usage Note
Esperpento is a distinctly Spanish cultural concept coined by the playwright Ramón del Valle-Inclán to describe a distorted, grotesque artistic vision that exaggerates reality to reveal its absurdity. In everyday speech it describes anything ludicrously ugly, absurd, or embarrassing (ese edificio es un esperpento, that building is an eyesore). It has no precise English equivalent.
Examples
"La ceremonia fue un auténtico esperpento."
Natural Translation
The ceremony was a genuine grotesque spectacle.
