especie

species

noun es-PEH-syeh Common

Also means

kind; sort

Usage Note

Especie is feminine and its plural especies is identical in spelling (a final -e just adds -s). Beyond biology it functions as a vague classifier meaning 'a kind of' or 'a sort of': una especie de contrato informal means 'a sort of informal contract'. Do not confuse it with especias (spices, always plural), which looks similar but has a different meaning.

Examples

"Esta especie está en peligro."

Natural Translation

This species is endangered.
