Esfuerzo derives from the verb esforzarse ('to make an effort'). The phrase hacer un esfuerzo ('to make an effort') is the standard collocation. Sin esfuerzo ('effortlessly') and con mucho esfuerzo ('with great effort') are common adverbial phrases.
