Usage Note

Erigir is a formal verb used for raising monuments, institutions, or founding bodies. The reflexive erigirse en means 'to set oneself up as' or 'to appoint oneself as': se erigió en líder del grupo ('he set himself up as the group's leader'). It follows the -ir conjugation with the spelling change g → j before o and a (e.g. erijo, erija).
