Entretanto is a slightly formal or literary synonym of mientras tanto (meanwhile). Both are correct, but mientras tanto is more common in everyday speech, while entretanto tends to appear in written or journalistic prose. It can also function as a noun: el entretanto (the interim), as in en el entretanto.
