Ensombrecido is the past participle of ensombrecer used as an adjective. It can describe something literally darkened by shadow (el pasillo ensombrecido) or, more often, figuratively clouded — a mood, a reputation, or a period of history (años ensombrecidos por la guerra). The feminine is ensombrecida. It occupies a literary register; everyday speech prefers oscurecido for physical darkness.
