Encefalopatía is a medical term denoting a disease or disorder of the brain. It is almost always encountered in compound forms, most notably encefalopatía espongiforme bovina ('bovine spongiform encephalopathy', or BSE/mad cow disease). All Spanish nouns ending in -ía are feminine. The word is pronounced with five syllables and the stress on the antepenultimate syllable of the ending.
