Usage Note
Empinado describes a slope, road, or terrain that rises sharply at a steep angle — una cuesta empinada (a steep hill). It is also the past participle of empinar, which means to tip up or to raise. In colloquial Spanish empinar el codo (literally 'to tip the elbow') means to drink heavily.
