Empatar specifically means to finish a game or contest with the same score — the English 'to draw' or 'to tie.' The noun empate (draw, tie) is extremely common in sports commentary. Outside sports, empatar can describe any situation where two options are level (las opciones empataron en votos). It is a regular -ar verb.
