Disputar means 'to contest or dispute' something (a claim, a territory) and is the standard verb for 'to play' a sporting match or competition (disputar un partido). Do not confuse with discutir, which focuses on arguing or debating. Disputarse (reflexive) means 'to compete for' something coveted.
