Usage Note
Dio is the preterite third-person singular of dar (to give): él/ella dio. Uniquely, dar takes -er/-ir preterite endings despite being an -ar verb, and neither di nor dio carries a written accent because both are monosyllabic. Do not confuse with Italian dio (god).
Examples
"Le dio las gracias al profesor."
Natural Translation
She gave thanks to the teacher.
Literal Translation
To-him gave the thanks to the teacher.
