Diferenciar is used transitively (diferenciar A de B, 'to differentiate A from B') or reflexively (diferenciarse de, 'to differ from'). It is a slightly more formal alternative to distinguir. The related noun is diferenciación. It is a regular -ar verb despite the -iar ending.
