Desmesurado describes something that goes far beyond normal or reasonable limits: ambición desmesurada (excessive ambition), un precio desmesurado (a wildly disproportionate price). It is stronger than exagerado (exaggerated) and slightly more literary. The root mesura (moderation, restraint) is itself a somewhat formal noun, so desmesurado fits formal and written registers best.
