Also means
to thaw
Usage Note
Derretir is used for melting solids with heat — chocolate, butter, ice — and it is an e→i stem-changing verb. The reflexive derretirse means 'to melt' intransitively or, figuratively, to be overwhelmed by affection: me derrito con esa canción ('that song makes me melt'). Do not confuse with fundir, which applies to metals and electronics.
Examples
"Derretí el chocolate a fuego lento."
Natural Translation
I melted the chocolate over low heat.
