Cuota covers several related senses: a membership or subscription fee (cuota de socio), a quota or allocated share (cuota de importación = 'import quota'), and a monthly instalment (pagar en cuotas = 'to pay in instalments'). In Latin America pagar en cuotas is the everyday phrase for buying on credit, equivalent to Spain's a plazos.
