Usage Note

Convocar is the standard verb for officially summoning people to a meeting, election, strike, or competition. It can take the event itself as its direct object (convocar elecciones, to call elections; convocar una huelga, to call a strike) or a person, with the event introduced by a (los convocó a una reunión, he called them to a meeting). The noun convocatoria (call, announcement, official summons) is very common in formal contexts.
