convencer

to convince

verb kohn-ben-SEHR Less Common

Usage Note

Convencer has a spelling change in the yo form: convenzo (not convenco), because the c softens to z before -o and -a to preserve the /s/ sound (seseo). It takes de before an infinitive or noun: convencer a alguien de algo. The adjective convincente (convincing) is widely used in written and spoken registers.

Examples

"No logré convencerla de venir."

Natural Translation

I did not manage to convince her to come.
