Contacto covers physical touch (contacto físico), a social/professional connection (mis contactos, my contacts/network), and electrical contact (un contacto eléctrico). The fixed phrase ponerse en contacto con (to get in touch with) is the standard way to say 'to contact someone' — the verb contactar exists but is considered less elegant in formal writing.
