Usage Note
Consistir is almost always followed by the preposition en — consiste en (it consists of / it is about). Using it without en is uncommon. It is the go-to verb for defining or explaining what something is made up of or entails, and is common in academic and formal writing. The related noun is consistencia (consistency, solidity).
