Conferencia can mean a large formal conference (conferencia internacional) or a single lecture or talk at a university (dar una conferencia = to give a talk). In telephony, conferencia telefónica is a conference call. Note that congreso is more common for an academic conference with multiple sessions, while conferencia leans toward a single-speaker event.
